Shotgun Start Holdem – Thursday 12/12 – Results

From Mike Levine:

Still waiting to get result sheet from Larry so I can update webpage, but this is what I know so far: Schiowitz won, followed by Mr. Ginsberg, RFG with another strong finish in third, Nancy taking 4th, Kobi walking away in 5th and I suck.  Still, Congrads to Mark and other top finishers and thanks to Taylors for cake, snack and my birthday present.  Appreciate the many birthday wishes I got, whether you meant it or not.  Thought the shot gun format worked well, and will be sticking with it.

Below is some funny commentary on his road to victory provided by an extremely humble Mark Schiowitz. Our next game is not until January 9th, so everyone have nice holiday.

For me the tournament came down to four or five hands and managing Steve Begleiter’s insufferable jaw boning.  The first significant hand came relatively early after Jeff Zinn shoved 3k+ with JJ, I shoved my remaining 5K with J9s (spades) and Matt put in the rest of his stack with TT.  Obviously, I’m not feeling great pre flop.  The flop comes with two spades – giving me the flush draw, the turn another spade and I almost triple up with a flush.  I nurse chips for the next hour forced to listen to Begs on-going rambling whose only discernible point is that he may be the greatest poker player on the planet.   The next big hand I’m on the button’ blinds are 400/800 when Begs makes it 1600 from UTG.  It folds to me, I call with 9Ts (spades) and I think Kobi in the BB calls.  The flop comes (3s,8s,6d) giving me a flush draw.  Kobi checks, Begs makes it 1600, I make it 4K, Kobi folds, Begs shoves and I insta call.  Begs shows a set of sixes.  Turn comes Js for my flush, and straight flush draw, and the river is a blank.

We count off chips and Begs has 100 left – to my dismay.  My reaction was a bit loud at not having busted Begs and for that I feel bad … but not that bad.   Anyway, the hand yielded some well-deserved peace and quiet.   Made it to the final table, busted Morgan Ruttman – no real challenge there –  then took a few blinds and antes, a couple of smallish pots until I bet 6K with ATo from UTG+1 and blinds 2000/4000.  Rob Goldbaum who had been the big stack for a while – shoved with A3s.  I called and we were heads up.  Flop came J,Q,K  giving me the straight, the kill and a nice chip stack. I ended up against  Robert Ginsberg.  We went back and forth for a while until he shoved with A9 and I called with Q9.  Not a great call, but given Ginsberg’s aggressive play, a few good shown bluffs and the fact that I wanted a scotch, I think arguably not totally mentally retarded.  Flop comes with a Q in the window, which held up.  Time for a scotch.

JABBERWOCKY

Lewis Carroll

(from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872) `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought —
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
