The commissioner writes:

Don’t mess with the birthday boy was the theme of last night’s game.  Play around the bubble tightened up, and Ben’s big stack whittled away as us short stocks managed to survive.  With Kadlec in big blind and no callers, Ben limped in the small holding Kks. Ben then bet into a seemingly innocent flop of 10, 9, 7,  and Dan, putting on one of the great acting jobs I have seen in NCPT lore, made a crying call.  A junk turn, an all in, yada yada, made Ben bubble boy as Dan flipped over j8. Down to five, play picked up.  Mr. Warm took 5th, non-member  Ginsburg 4th, and yours truly finished third.  Mr. Silverman and the birthday boy ended up splitting first place prize and points as it was 1 am and their stacks where pretty even.

Fun time, think even an illegal immigrant would have enjoyed last night.  I will post results as soon as I can.

Shotgun Start Holdem – Thursday 12/12 – Results

From Mike Levine:

Still waiting to get result sheet from Larry so I can update webpage, but this is what I know so far: Schiowitz won, followed by Mr. Ginsberg, RFG with another strong finish in third, Nancy taking 4th, Kobi walking away in 5th and I suck.  Still, Congrads to Mark and other top finishers and thanks to Taylors for cake, snack and my birthday present.  Appreciate the many birthday wishes I got, whether you meant it or not.  Thought the shot gun format worked well, and will be sticking with it.

Below is some funny commentary on his road to victory provided by an extremely humble Mark Schiowitz. Our next game is not until January 9th, so everyone have nice holiday.

For me the tournament came down to four or five hands and managing Steve Begleiter’s insufferable jaw boning.  The first significant hand came relatively early after Jeff Zinn shoved 3k+ with JJ, I shoved my remaining 5K with J9s (spades) and Matt put in the rest of his stack with TT.  Obviously, I’m not feeling great pre flop.  The flop comes with two spades – giving me the flush draw, the turn another spade and I almost triple up with a flush.  I nurse chips for the next hour forced to listen to Begs on-going rambling whose only discernible point is that he may be the greatest poker player on the planet.   The next big hand I’m on the button’ blinds are 400/800 when Begs makes it 1600 from UTG.  It folds to me, I call with 9Ts (spades) and I think Kobi in the BB calls.  The flop comes (3s,8s,6d) giving me a flush draw.  Kobi checks, Begs makes it 1600, I make it 4K, Kobi folds, Begs shoves and I insta call.  Begs shows a set of sixes.  Turn comes Js for my flush, and straight flush draw, and the river is a blank.

We count off chips and Begs has 100 left – to my dismay.  My reaction was a bit loud at not having busted Begs and for that I feel bad … but not that bad.   Anyway, the hand yielded some well-deserved peace and quiet.   Made it to the final table, busted Morgan Ruttman – no real challenge there –  then took a few blinds and antes, a couple of smallish pots until I bet 6K with ATo from UTG+1 and blinds 2000/4000.  Rob Goldbaum who had been the big stack for a while – shoved with A3s.  I called and we were heads up.  Flop came J,Q,K  giving me the straight, the kill and a nice chip stack. I ended up against  Robert Ginsberg.  We went back and forth for a while until he shoved with A9 and I called with Q9.  Not a great call, but given Ginsberg’s aggressive play, a few good shown bluffs and the fact that I wanted a scotch, I think arguably not totally mentally retarded.  Flop comes with a Q in the window, which held up.  Time for a scotch.

JZ Marathon Hold Em – Results and Apology

Mike Levine writes:

Before I go into results, I would like to apologize on behalf of our league to our new guests, Andrew, Jen and Steve.  I don’t if it was the tight squeeze in the back, or the difficulty in parking, but the bitching and whining level last night was at an all-time high.  Sorry for that, usually we are much more of a harmonious group.  Well… not that much more.

Kidding aside, I think I need to remind everyone, this isn’t the Bellagio or the Wynn, and I am not a casino host.  I am trying to run a fun and social poker game as best and as fairly as I can.  I am sorry if you don’t like the snacks, your dealer, your seat, the room, or if we run out of scotch. I can’t force people to arrive on a timely basis or sing, especially new people, if they don’t want to.  I can’t assign seating, count money or get set up any quicker. We hire the dealers for five hours and Trump would like us out usually by 1am.  So the blinds are the blinds, stop bitching about them!   I think we all need to be more cognizant of the level of orneriness in the room.  I am not immune to it myself, but some of you like to complain a little too much.  Always room for improvements, but if you really don’t like the game or have issues, can always ask for you league entry money back, no questions asked. Similarly, if I think one’s behavior deters from us having as good as time as possible, I am not shy about doing something about it.  Enough said.

Back to results.  I knew the moment I handed Taylor my chips, I doubled up the wrong guy.  I was trying to steal his big blind and he only had $2500 in chips with blinds at $300/$600.  With four rebuys on the night, MT went on to win the biggest point and payout total in NCPT history.  Mr. Ginsberg came in second, with RFG utilizing his re-buy option effectively to finish in third.  Kidcatcher reclaimed his winning ways with a 4th place finish, and William, who doubled up on the second hand of the night,  managed to take 5th.  Congratulations to winners.  I included Taylor’s color commentary below for the faithful.

Website has been updated and link is below.   Password ncpt14.  Unfortunately website doesn’t track kills of people who re-bought, but I will track those separately.

Thanks to Morgan for the snack (btw Morgan, snack only cost you $375), and next game is on December 12th.  Until then, Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Hey bud,
Results are attached. Sorry for the delay but just got out of bed at 11am, after getting less than my needed 8 hrs as Nancy and I hung at Quaker with John Re, Erin and her boyfriend, Niles until about 3am! WTF do I think I’m doing?

Anyway, I will provide what limited recall of the results of last night, and you should probably have a few others chime in, including Ginsberg and Goldbaum.

Without exact details, there were several bad beats dished out as baby Aces spanked big Aces at least 2 or 3 times, with Jeff E busting on a painful A4 or something from Ginsberg vs his AK or AJ. William also flopped 2 pair with A2 vs Ginsberg’s big A earlier. I forgot exact hands but I know I felt Ben Lieb’s exit pain as I know he made a great call against an RFG shove only to see RFG hit something like a 3 outer on the river.

Final table started a bit slow, with JZ reiterating it was the most painful final table of the 47 he’s had to sit through. We might have had 8 players still in at midnight but it was all over by 12:30. Ginsberg was small stacked for a bit but caught a massive roll to chip leader as he scored 3 out of the 4 kills as the table went from 8 down to 4. Unfortunately for him, I got the next 3 kills. I don’t remember exactly how Dr B went out but I’m pretty sure I got it in good vs him. I was kindly served up my best pot of the night when I found AA in the BB, and smooth called, in a hand RFG opened from the button or cutoff. I check the 884 flop with 2 diamonds before RFG makes a pot sized bet. I go All in with about the same size raise so he was committed, but probably not too upset to call with a pair and flush draw (his words, never showed cards) but the bullets held for over a 50k pot. That wasnt the hand he busted on as he had many mor ethan me pre-hand but shortly thereafter I called his shove and my big A finally hit to win the flip vs his 55. Heads up had a few hands with the chip lead going back and forth but the last hand pretty much played itself. It all got in after a 4 bet shove/call with RG beaming with 99 until he saw my pocket 10s, which held. Coincidentally, as Mike was counting out the chip stacks, we each had exactly the same amount- Game ,Set, Match!

NCPT14 – Can’t we all just get along Hold Em? – 10/24 Results

From Mike Levine:

Wish I stuck around to see it, but it looks like Zinnsanity ran into the will of Morgan. Rookie member Morgan Rutman was the winner on the night, besting guest and Northern Westchester Hospital honoree Bruce Yablon. Mr. Ginsberg came in third, Morgan slew the early chip leader JZ who still had a good showing in 4th, and guest Jeff Millet finished in 5th.

Leaving for the weekend on early flight, so online results went be updated till Monday. But congratulations to Morgan on being the winner of the largest tournament in NCPT history. Well done. if anyone else wants to throw in some color, feel free.

Have a good Halloween.

NCPT14 Open House Hold Em – Results

From Mike Levine:

First I want to thank all those who came from Greeley Open House for showing up.  Expected a couple of you whipped people to bag it at the last minute and the fact that you all came was appreciated.

Congratulations to JZ.  With last night’s win, he picks up right where he left off last year – first place in points.  Also, Congrads to Steve Plank, who busted his money cherry with a third place finish and picked up 7 kills along the way.  Paul’s ringer friend – Keith Iceberg (or Goldberg, or Heisenberg…lot of bergs out there) took second place in his inaugural showing and the always strong Larry and Begs finished in 4th and 5th respectively.  Anybody get any video of Schiowitz getting knocked out on the bubble with Begs finishing in 5th?

Two games in, no Karaoke Mulligans used.  Next game is around the corner on 10/24, with Mr. Zinn on snack duty.  Results posted to website.

Have a nice weekend.

NCPT14 Inaugural Tournament Results

Our Correspondent Mark Taylor writes:
1st- Jeff E
2nd-  Mark T
3rd- Paul F
4th- Ben L
5th-  Rob M

Not sure if Jeff or anyone is providing commentary but I can provide a little. Forgot how Dan K busted on $ bubble but Jeff battled back like a champ as he was down to 4k or so when got to 5 handed. His initial push came on a 3 way All-in with Rob holding AA when Ben shoved with AJs and Jeff called as so short with something like KQ (2 broadway cards).  Jeff hits a gut shot straight on the river to snatch the Main, albeit smaller, pot. Rob’s bullets held up vs Ben to take the side pot, which was probably the biggest pot of the night up to that point, doing serious damage to Ben’s previously significant stack. Not sure how Rob got whittled down but he and I ended up all-in against each other, both holding A5s. Rainbow flop gave each of us back door hopes for a flush, when running diamonds filled mine, much to Rob’s discontent. A very tough exit. Somewhere after that, I remember getting all-in vs Jeff holding A8 vs his A2, leaving him only a 24% dog. I still had him out-chipped at that point, smelling another kill. Board flops AAK, not ideal but I was still in the lead. K on the turn gives us each Aces full for the split, sub-optimal result, for me at least. Even though I had 5 straight kills of all leaving in places 3-7, when it got to heads up, Jeff had, or got, the chip lead. i get All-in with A5s vs his 10-8, feeling good once again, only to watch him flop a Boat (his 2nd flopped boat of the final table!)  It was Jeff’s night as he showed tenacity battling back from the felt to claim the title.  Well played to Jeff, and all others down the wire.

NCPT13 – The Costanza Game – May 9th – Status – Results

Click to find out who won the Costanza Game

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It was really nice to have better hands hold up and to suck out on someone else for a change! Someday, I wish to enjoy flopping a full house or a straight like Begs but I’ll have to wait till I’m really good! A thank you to Zinn for not being present and giving me a chance!  A big shout out to Dave for waiting for what felt like eternity and intermittently singing “Ladies Night” and Larry for pacing around like and expectant father, repeatedly telling the Doctor and Paul that he was rooting for me! For the rest of my life I will remember Larry picking me up, swinging me around in a tight hug- as we were jumping up and down Dave was rounding the table, coming in to join us-then Doc, then Paul, then the dealer!  It was priceless!  I really wish we had video of that moment-best, most memorable  group hug EVER – freekin’ hysterical!
Monkey off my back is an understatement! I’m not sure how you play in this league (only missing I think 2 games-Panama and surgery) and never come in first place! It was making me mental and fucking with my poker self- esteem! So NOW…..much to everyone’s delight, I will no longer be bitching and moaning about never coming in first! This will especially please Schiowitz, so I’ll have to come up with additional things to annoy him!  See you all next game! Waaahoooo!

The placenta was delicious and I’m pretty sure I came in 2nd. It’s the story of my life: always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Congratulations to Nancy on a great tournament!

On May 10, 2013, at 6:07 PM, David Perlmutter

Paul was looking pretty invincible for a while, especially when he knocked out Dan (5th) and me (6th) on the same hand.  Larry  (4th) came up with a new move last night, the button steal with pocket aces.  Fortunately I’ve figured out his tell for the next time he tries that one.

Dr. Berck (3rd) had a monster stack for most of the final table.  Then as the blinds leapt up, the final three had pretty even stacks.  Dr. B’s stock of placenta energy snacks ran out with his luck, and it was down to Paul and Nancy.  I’ll let Larry fill in all of the colorful details.

Some of us were happier than others about the final result but we were all thrilled for Nancy. Even if she did knock me out when her A7 found an ace on the flop to overcome the power of my pocket 6’s.
And for the record I had a couple of final table appearances including a 2nd place finish last year. But I agree that this year has not treated me well. Or vice versa.

Congrats Nancy!!!  Well deserved and long overdue.

Also, nice call William!!!!

Here’s what I recall from the FT action, if anyone really cares. William exited in 8th when Nancy went all in with AQ and William called with 56s and a fairly healthy stack. William remarked, “what the hell was I thinking?”, but it was really the same call that Begs makes every day (the only difference is that Begs’ hand wins). Schio exited in 7th after first suffering a bad beat on the river to chop a big pot with Perlmutter, followed by another unfortunate beat to Perlmutter who received demerits for his sportsmanship (the actual infraction involved grinding his pelvis). Larry weakened Kadlec’s stack with some sophisticated post-flop play with T3s, if I do say so myself. Then a three-way pot developed between Perlmutter (AJ) and Kadlec (AQ) and Paul (QQ), but no Ace came, sending two more to the rail. Larry then tried two failed semi-bluffs but folded to big stack Berck’s well-timed 3-bet(s), putting a chink in my armor. Paul finished me off with his AQ vs A3. Those three had basically equal stacks with blinds at 2k/4k and very solid play continued for 30 more minutes. You already know the storybook ending, Paul in 3rd, Dave B 2nd, and Nancy 1st. Congrats Nancy!! The New Castle poker queen got a monkey off her back ain’t just the name of a Bob Dylan song anymore.

I am still waiting for the final results from Larry, but this is what I know – we had two milestones last night.  After seven years and her share of money finishes, our Queen Nancy finally finished on top.  I don’t know details or whom she bested on her way to her first place finish, but I am very that she finally has this Mark (I meant Monkey) off her back.   Congratulations Nancy on your win and also making the final table.   Also, I understand that Mr. Friedman, after two years, finally broke his points and money cherry last night. Congratulations Paul – see, that $10k you spent in poker lessons seems to be paying off.

Website and other details, I don’t know and will update as soon as I get details from Larry.  As you know, my opposite approach didn’t fair too well last night.  So I will be back to my petulant self the next time – but maybe in drag.

NCPT13 Now Online at PokerStars.net

I am proud to say that NCPT13 now has a home game at Pokerstars.net.  This is perfect for those times when we can’t get together to play but are jonesing for some poker with friends.  We had our first test game last night, put together on very short notice.  We were 5 handed only, but it was a lot of fun.  mtaylormade came in first, dperl came in 2nd, NoTells2c 3rd, BenGurionFan 4th, and whipsawmike 5th.  You get a lot of hands in a very short amount of time.  Although there are certain limitations, there is a decent amount of flexibility in how things are set up.  You can play cash and also tournaments.  If you would like to be an admin, please let me know and your application will be considered by the committee.

You can’t play on your iPad unfortunately, but that seems to be the only drawback so far.  I e mailed PokerStars.net to ask if they would include Home Games in a future edition of the iPad App.  They responded within minutes with the following: “PokerStars Movile Poker application has several differences when compared to the computer software.

One of these is the Home Games feature you mentioned.

We are afraid that this feature is currently not available.

However, please note that we value a lot of our players’ feedback, so if you really like for this or any other feature to be included let us hear your thoughts.  If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again..

April 24th -Evan’s Team Tournament – Results

I had a front row seat for much of the Oedipal drama that unfolded last night.  First table I was seated at had Nancy, whom the Fates were unkind to, as she lost to runner runner 99 two hands in a row. Were those nines or the Fates speaking in oracular German, nein, nein, mein Frau Taylor?

Next stop in this three act play was a seat next to young Matthew Taylor.  Matthew was down to a below average stack when he started running good, as only a member of the NCPT Lucky Sperm Club can.  When I pointed out to him that he was not old enough to take advantage of first prize, he retorted without hesitation that he would give the prize to his mother, as his father had done nothing with his chances at the WSOP.  At this moment, the gods on Mt. Olympus put down their goblets of mead and ceased their fornicating to watch as Act III, The Final Table, began to unfold.

Taylor fils was seated to Taylor père’s left, and I to his right.  Having previously claimed my bounty for knocking out Howie Rubin, a moment I took as a good omen, as a similar feat had marked my passage through the fire to victory in the Intrepid tournament back in 2010.  However, that was just a red herring the gods threw in to heighten the drama.  I rose to the empyrean chip lead, only to see my hubris rewarded with my full house, queens full of 4s, busted by a guy with the unlikely nickname of Sheik’s quad queens.  Would that I had sacrificed a fatted calf and burned incense upon the altar and splash the smooth retsina upon the stones so that I may have pleased the gods more! I was not dead, just suffering from mortal wounds.  Mark quickly dispatched Sheik with quad kings, and it was down to the Taylor’s and me.  Rapidly escalating blinds and card death were the end of me.  Taylor only had to close my eyes and put two coins on the lids.  Then the Oedipal battle began in earnest, only to be cut short by the gods last cruel joke, blinds rapidly escalating to 25k and 50 k, then in short order, 50 and 100.  As Mark put it, it became a game of War.  The gods smiled upon Taylor, which is probably just as well for Matthew, as we all know that young Oedipus did not fare well after killing his father.

I am curious as to the epilogue that will be playing out chez Taylor, but leave you with Nancy’s words that echoed throughout Trump as the doors closed behind me.  “Isn’t your father so annoying?  Now you know why I make him sleep in the shed for 3 nights after poker!

Your faithful servant,

Sophocles
